NASA and SpaceX to Launch Air Quality Instrument

NASA and SpaceX are preparing to launch the Tropospheric Emissions Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) instrument on Friday, April 7. The launch is scheduled for no earlier than 12:30 a.m. EDT from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

TEMPO is the first space-based instrument designed to monitor major air pollutants hourly in high spatial resolution. It will cover a region stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from the Canadian oil sands to below Mexico City, encompassing the entire continental United States.

The instrument will be launched atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket as a payload on the Intelsat 40E satellite. It was built by Ball Aerospace and integrated onto Intelsat 40E by Maxar.
